Enigmatic Surface Ruptures at Cape Rytyi and Surroundings, Baikal Rift, Siberia: Seismic Hazard Implication

چکیده

The geomorphic expression of active faulting and distinction paleoseismic events in areas that are rapidly obscured by erosion/sedimentation still remains a considerable scientific problem. present article discusses the revealing surface ruptures their parameters to identify capable faults without trenching estimate magnitude earthquakes. case study was at Cape Rytyi, located Baikal-Lena Nature Reserve on northwestern shore Lake Baikal. Based unmanned aerial photography, GPR, structural observations, we mapped investigated relation between geomorphological forms ruptures. obtained results show past landslides paleoruptures Rytyi its surroundings associated with least two Mw earlier event 7.3 (Ms = 7.4); later one 7.1 7.3). distal part delta Rita River southeastern slope Baikal Ridge were included seismogenic rupture zone, which traces some 37 km along Kocherikovsky fault. approximate intervals earthquakes occurred 12–5 ka 4–0.3 ka, respectively. applied analysis methods can be useful for paleoseismology assessing seismic hazards similar regions elsewhere.

Updating Seismic Hazard at Parkfield

The occurrence of the September 28, 2004 Mw=6.0 mainshock at Parkfield, California, has significantly increased the mean and aperiodicity of the series of time intervals between mainshocks in this segment of the San Andreas fault. We use five different statistical distributions as renewal models to fit this new series and to estimate the time-dependent probability of the next Parkfield mainshoc...

The 1909 Taipei earthquake—implication for seismic hazard in Taipei

S U M M A R Y The 1909 April 14 Taiwan earthquake caused significant damage in Taipei. Most of the information on this earthquake available until now is from the written reports on its macro-seismic effects and from seismic station bulletins. In view of the importance of this event for assessing the shaking hazard in the present-day Taipei, we collected historical seismograms and station bullet...

Fish and Fishing in Holocene Cis-Baikal, Siberia: A Review

Eastern Siberia’s Lake Baikal and its tributaries are productive fisheries, and the region’s Holocene archaeological sites confirm that this is a long-standing phenomenon. Recent zooarchaeological investigations of sites here allow Holocene fishing practices to be examined in more detail than was previously possible. Along much of the lake’s coast, bathymetry is very steep and the water very co...

Climate Change and the World’s “Sacred Sea”—Lake Baikal, Siberia

L Baikal in southeastern Siberia, the “Sacred Sea,” incites strong emotions and action in Russia. In March 2006, 5000 people in Irkutsk, Russia, protested the proposed construction of an oil pipeline scheduled to pass within 800 meters (m) of Lake Baikal’s shoreline, and, within days, President Putin announced the pipeline would be rerouted outside the lake’s watershed (Cullison 2007). In July ...

Deep structure and origin of the Baikal rift zone

P-wave velocity images are determined under the Baikal rift zone in Siberia by using teleseismic tomography. Our results show prominent low-velocity anomalies in the upper mantle under the Baikal rift zone and high-velocity anomalies in the lithosphere under the Siberian craton. The low-velocity anomalies are interpreted as a mantle upwelling (plume) which has played an important role in the in...
